Part three: Nature Walk

One thing that we did during my first semester of college was when I went with my learning community to see where all of the waste from our food and such goes during a nature walk. It was a long walk and of course was very hot, but we completed it and survived the hike from the Baker center to the place out by the Ridges. For those of you who don’t know, it was probably a three mile hike one way and of course had to go on the other side of campus because most of us lived on East Green. But enough about the walk, it was interesting to go and see where all the waste and left over food goes that we don’t eat or finish and where the recycling goes in as well. Now if you think about it, Ohio University consists of three dining halls and two restaurants inside of the Baker Center and have kids all over the place eating food and throwing stuff away. However, when we went there, it wasn’t as big and what you would expect. What I learned is they would take all the trash and throw it all into one thing and then add it to these long piles of trash and just keep adding to them. Now these piles at the time where about 40-50 feet long and there where three of them so as you can imagine, you need a nice sized space of land in order to fit all of this and the building and machines that create the trash. img_4386Photo taken by: John Jarosik

Now take this photo of trash for example and times that by a couple of thousands and that is how much trash just in a single day we go through as a school. It really surprised me to see what they do with all the trash because if you think about it, there has to be tons of it everyday at a major university like Ohio is. I still have the picture in my head of the pile of trash that was near us and how many broken or pieced plastic forks there where just on one side of the pile. It really makes you think of how much you eat and throw away as a student here and how it all looks once you combine it all.

Being that there where thousands of tons of garbage on this piece of land, its just interesting to see how much throwing something away goes and what it can all lead to. Other than it being a hot day out and there being so much to walk, it was a great experience and one that I will keep in the back of my mind for awhile and overtime I throw something out.
